The Shack Redux
A couple of posts ago, I said that I’m not going to read The Shack. Nothing has really changed for me, but I should add that I’m not a fiction reader to begin with, so the likelihood that I was ever going to read The Shack was already next to nothing. Here’s what I want to say about this and then I’ll close up for the night.
There is nothing wrong with reading The Shack. I’m not telling anyone to not read it. It may be a great work of fiction and may be very entertaining, and therefore enjoyable. What I am saying is read it with a disclaimer. Listen to what the book’s detractors are saying and keep it in mind as you read. My fear isn’t for the mature believer per say, but rather for the new believer, the weak believer, and the lost person. A combination of the positive hype surrounding the book and weak foundation in Truth, which many people have, may cause them to elevate the content of this book to an improper place. There needs to be clarity on this: The Shack is not inspired by the Holy Spirit, therefore treat it as a work of fiction and move on. Gain inspiration and entertainment from it, but avoid attempts to gain Truth from it. That’s all I have to say about that.
Mark Driscoll on “The Shack”
I know I might be a little “Johnny come lately” about posting this but it deserves to be posted. If you are reading, or have read, or are considering reading the book, “The Shack,” you should view this video. “The Shack” is being hailed by a lot of people as a modern day “Pilgrim’s Progress.” Be cautious. Many evangelical leaders have came out against this book because it promotes a heresy. I haven’t read the book, but when people like John Piper and Mark Driscoll (there are others as well, but these two are the only ones to whom I have listened to their comments) come out against this book, I am comfortable in saying that I’m not going to read it.
